KL Rahul Early Career, Playing Style & Career Timeline

KL Rahul was born into an academically driven family in Karnataka. His father, a former director at NITK Surathkal, and his mother, a university professor, encouraged him to balance education with sport.

He began formal cricket training at the age of 10 and represented both Bangalore United Cricket Club and a Mangaluru-based club. At 18, he moved to Bengaluru to study at Jain University while pursuing cricket professionally.

In January 2023, KL Rahul married actor Athiya Shetty. The couple welcomed their daughter in March 2025.

Rahul progressed through Karnataka’s age-group system and represented India at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, a phase that shaped his sound technique and calm temperament.

He made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy season. After being left out the following year, Rahul returned strongly in 2012–13, re-establishing himself as a dependable top-order batter.

The breakthrough came during Karnataka’s 2013–14 Ranji Trophy title-winning season, where he scored over 1000 runs and delivered a Player-of-the-Match performance in the final, firmly putting himself on the national radar.

Rahul’s rise continued in the 2014 – 15 Duleep Trophy, where twin centuries in the final proved decisive. Those performances directly earned him a place in India’s Test squad for the tour of Australia.

He made his Test debut during the 2014 Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

That hundred laid the foundation for productive overseas tours, with centuries in Sri Lanka and the West Indies, though early dismissals at times earned him an “all-or-nothing” tag.

KL Rahul Career Journey & Key Milestones

KL Rahul made his Test debut in the 2014 Boxing Day Test at the MCG. After a nervous start, he was backed for the Sydney Test, where he responded with a composed maiden Test century, becoming one of the youngest Indians to score a hundred in Australia.

That innings kickstarted a strong overseas run. Rahul went on to score Test centuries in Sri Lanka and the West Indies, earning a reputation for converting starts, even as early dismissals occasionally earned him an “all-or-nothing” tag.

Rahul’s white-ball career took off in 2016 on India’s Zimbabwe tour, where he scored a century on ODI debut. On the same tour, he also struck a century on T20I debut, a rare achievement that underlined his adaptability.

Despite injuries interrupting his momentum, Rahul returned with a defining innings – a career-best 199 vs England in Chennai (2017).

Between 2018 and 2021, Rahul moved in and out of the Test side as India experimented with combinations. During this phase, he worked extensively on his defensive technique and made a strong comeback in 2021, scoring memorable overseas hundreds at Lord’s and Centurion.

He also served as India’s Test vice-captain, reflecting the team management’s faith in his leadership and experience in overseas conditions.

As competition for batting spots intensified, Rahul made a crucial career adjustment by taking up wicketkeeping duties to remain in the XI. The move extended his white-ball career and added balance to the Indian side.

Post-2022, Rahul shifted to No.5 in ODIs, a move that transformed his white-ball career.

During the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rahul played several match-defining innings, including an unbeaten 97 vs Australia after India collapsed to 3 for 2.

He finished the tournament as India’s highest run-scorer at No.5, top-scored for India in the final, and emerged as one of the tournament’s most reliable wicketkeepers.

With Rohit Sharma unavailable, Rahul returned to the opening role during the 2024-25 Australia tour, displaying discipline and patience.

He scored a crucial fifty at Perth and followed it up with important second-innings contributions in England, including 137 at Headingley and 55 at Edgbaston.
