What is the IPL playoff format RULES?
The IPL features 10 teams, and the top 4 teams with the most points will qualify for the playoffs! To reach the final, teams must go through three stages: the first round of qualifiers, the eliminator, and the second round of qualifiers. The IPL final (championship match) is decided by a single match and follows T20 rules.
Qualifier 1: First vs Second
The team ranked 1st on the IPL points table will face the team ranked 2nd. The winner will directly advance to the IPL final, while the loser will play against the winner of the eliminator in a single match. Surely, every team will want to secure a victory in the first qualifier to reduce the pressure of the upcoming matches!
Eliminator: Third vs Fourth
The team ranked 3rd on the IPL points table will face the team ranked 4th. The winner will advance to the final qualifier, while the loser will be eliminated.
Final Qualifier
The loser of Qualifier 1 will face the winner of the Eliminator, with the winner advancing to the IPL final. The 3rd place will be determined by the loser of the Final Qualifier, and the 4th place will be determined by the loser of the Eliminator.

In case of a tie in the IPL playoffs and final, a Super Over (1 over per team) will be played, or in some cases, a Double Super Over. Each team will send 1 bowler and 3 batters to play an additional over to decide the winner.
If the first Super Over in the playoffs ends in a tie, the winner will be decided based on the league standings. In the final, if the first Super Over ends in a tie, a Double Super Over will be played. If the result is still a tie, the team that finished higher in the regular season standings will be declared the winner.
If the Super Over cannot be played due to weather or other reasons, the winner will be decided based on the league standings.
What if it rains during the IPL playoffs or the final?
In the IPL Playoffs and Finals, if rain interrupts the match, the umpire will decide whether to continue the match or not, depending on the circumstances. There will be a 120-minute extension to complete the match. If the rain is too heavy, a ‘Holding Day’ will be used and play will continue the next day.
When both teams have completed 5 innings (6 balls per inning), the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method will be used to calculate the score and determine the winner. If the result is a tie, a Super Over or Double Super Over is played.
Example of the situation:
- Team A completes 20 overs, and Team B reaches 4 overs. If the match is deemed unable to continue, a Reserve Day will be used, and the match will resume on another day.
- Team A completes 20 overs, and Team B reaches 6 overs. The umpires can decide the winner based on the scores of both teams and using the DLS method. The match result is considered valid.
💡If a Reserve Day is used, the match will continue from the point it was interrupted, without restarting.
